Renaissance Festival

Maryland has one of the largest Renaissance Festivals in the nation, and as a lover of all things medieval, Beki and I were keen to attend. Last year our friends the Curtis's took pity on us since I wasn't working and took us, but this year we got passes so that we could go twice! (Super Geek!!!) We went on Labor Day, which because of Hurricane Irene happened to be the opening weekend, and as things worked out we ended up going on the closing weekend as well. We need to do better at our planning.

The boy was happy to go for two reasons: #1 We were going with his best friend Dean, and #2 he was going to get his face painted. We are not sure where the desire for face painting came from, but sometime in May he decided that we needed to go to the face painting place and get his face painted. We explained that we had no idea where a face painting place was, but as the RenFest drew nearer, we knew that they did face painting there, and so we had the boy worked into a pretty good frenzy for it. When we got there it did not take him long to find the face painters.

We can never get him to sit still, but a scantily clad face painter? He'll sit there all day.

Look at how chill he is...he was perfectly still the entire time.

Papa and Dean watched the whole thing through the window.

There was really no question as to what was going on the face - It was going to be a Dragon, and it had to be RED!

 Not too shabby...

 Hello World, behold the Awesome!!

 Striking a pose with Dean.

After Face Painting it was time for the joust. They had four knights who did a variety of horseback skills before...

Grabbing their lances and trying to knock each other off their horse! (I don't think they were trying very hard, but still, real horses, real lances, real cool!)

Then there were some medieval carnival games...

And the always popular pirate ship playground.

After some time at the playground, it was time to head over to the armory to get...

A totally awesome sword and shield!!!!!!!

Dean got a set too (just wait, you know what is coming.)

Ha, bet you weren't expecting me to show off my awesome juggling skills!!!!

Ok, here is the battle scene. They were very good about only hitting the shield, and not each other.

 I dub thee "Sir Mommy!"

Now I know what you are thinking, "wait, what happened to the dragon?" Well, these last pictures are from our second trip that we made.

This is Hildi - he is my favorite performer that come to this. He juggles stuff and balances swords, but it is he self deprecating quick wit that just has me rolling on the ground laughing.

He wears Leiderhosen for heavens sakes!!!

More carnival games...mommy would't let us go do the "Drench a Wench"''' dunk tank, so we shot cannons instead.

The boy saw this and he knew just what to do. (I had to hold him up cause the little step in the back wasn't high enough.)

And since I was back there anyway...

As we were leaving we passed this horse trailer...wouldn't this give you a moments pause as you were driving down the road?
